If you're using Kubuntu Jaunty already (not recommended for casual users), you maybe have the problem that only KDE applications play a sound while other applications (like VLC or Flash) keep soundless. I solved the problem with the command below:
asoundconf set-pulseaudio

I had this issue on a fresh Kubuntu Jaunty alpha 5 installation, and solved it by opening KMix and raising PCM volume, which was defaulted to zero.
All without messing with pulseaudio

You're right. I finally manage to solve my problem with flash, thx to your advice.
Thanks, you saved my life. I had virtualbox with XP just to play half life, and no sound was working. If you wouldn't have come along, I might have beaten the game on mute.
You really shouldn't need to mess with asoundconf at all (we're removing it in karmic; Debian unstable has already removed it from its alsa-utils). Let's consider the scenarios:
1) default Kubuntu with pulseaudio package uninstalled,
2) Kubuntu with pulseaudio package installed.
In case (1), nothing is routed through PulseAudio. In case (2), the pulseaudio package already ships a configuration file (/usr/share/alsa/pulse-alsa.conf) used to route native ALSA apps through PulseAudio (which then, of course, use ALSA directly).
Ok, thanks for explanation. Does (1) mean every app uses then ALSA directly? Because I'm definitely sure that the sound didn't work for apps like vlc and flash after I installed Kubuntu Jaunty Beta (fresh install).
Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write in my blog something like that. Can I take part of your post to my site? Of course, I will add backlink?

Thx for the solution, bro!
FLASH plugin won't play thourh ALSA, so U will have to install Pulse and set it to work with it.BUT problem with Intel onboard soundcard may occur - crackling..
So, this is how I did make FLASH play and how I did remove craklink sound comes from Pulse..
Follow all the steps on ubuntu forums to install pulse and all the supporting files, THAN update privillegies to users to play audio (as desribed) and reboot !!!
Now U can see exept NULL output the whole output - INTEL
BUT probably with crackling sound..
So, run Device chooser form menu to control the fuse output, run device audio manager to choose pulse for all the programs AND AFTER THAT !! (funny)
run Gnome audio mixer, because Kmix wont be able to raise the volume, raise the volume in Gnome mixer and AFTER doing this, the Kmix will be working, put the volume up and wualaaaaa - crackling is gone, sound works - even in flash..
ufff ufff
took me 2 hours..
Hot damn after all that web searching all I had to do was raise the PCM volume.
Thanks a million Spawn!!!!!!
